Session Script: Introduce Worksheets Without Breaking the Sessions Flow

How to introduce worksheets to clients without it completely killing the flow of the session?

Say this (15 seconds)

I’ve got a quick worksheet that can help organize what you just said. Would it be okay if we try it for 2 minutes together? If it doesn’t fit, we’ll stop and go back to talking.”
Follow with: “You can jot, circle, or tell me and I’ll write.

30-second version (adds why + roles)

“To make this practical, I have a one-page tool that maps triggers → thoughts → actions. It usually helps people see the pattern quickly. Would you be open to trying it for 2–3 minutes? You can talk and I’ll write, or we can do it together. If it’s not helpful, we’ll drop it.”

60-second version (trauma-informed)

“I’m hearing a lot of fast, intense pieces. I have a gentle worksheet that can slow things down and give us a shared visual. Some people like to write; others prefer to talk while I scribe; some just point and circle. We’d try it for about 3 minutes and you can stop or switch at any time. Want to see if it helps right now?”

Tweaks

  • Telehealth: “I’ll put the one-pager on screen and give you control to type. If that’s awkward, I’ll type for us. We’ll try 2 minutes and check in.”
  • Group: “Let’s pause for a shared 2-minute sheet to capture one thought, one feeling, one action. Pair or solo; sharing is optional.”

If they say “no”

  • “Got it—let’s keep it verbal.”
  • “Would a one-question version be okay?”
  • “I’ll sketch boxes on a sticky while we talk so you don’t have to write.”

When dysregulation is high

“First, let’s do a 60-second grounding (breath/5-senses). Then we can use the tiniest version—just circle one word.”

Homework framing

First, dont call it homework - call it practice. Frame it as a skill that you need to practice to get good at.

Give them a copy. Remove as many barriers to attempting the worksheet as possible.
